To achieve sustainable goals in tourism, agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) is an extremely valuable technology. In the third episode of "dTS | Data-driven Tourism for Sustainability" discusses Prof. Dr. Thomas Lampoltshammer (UWK) with Prof. Dr. Johannes Scholz and Dr. Ivan Majic from the Institute for Geodesy at Graz University of Technology on the possibilities of ABMS in the tourism sector.
ABMS makes it possible to model complex interactions between individual actors or agents in a system. In the case of tourism, these agents are, for example, tourists, companies, local people and public institutions, all of which interact with each other and form the entire tourism ecosystem. By taking into account various variables such as traffic flows, environmental impacts, prices and seasonal fluctuations, ABMS can provide a realistic picture of what is happening in tourism.
A main focus of the conversation is the importance of sustainability in tourism. Agent-based simulation can help make sustainable decisions that minimize environmental impact, respect local culture, while bringing economic benefits. The dTS project uses exactly this technology to develop tourism in the regions of Salzburg and Bruck Fusch without endangering the ecological and social balance.
