Visitor flow control

Over-tourism is a phenomenon whereby popular regions, destinations and tourist attractions are excessively frequented by tourists. Due to the individuality of each region, there are different solutions, but no all-encompassing magic formula how to avoid over-tourism. The use case "visitor flow management" is one of these approaches.

Mission

Over-tourism needs solutions that can be implemented individually for destinations. Some destinations have already found their own approaches from which both the region and its residents as well as the tourists benefit.

In order to be able to implement solution strategies sustainably and holistically, networking is needed - a kind of "smart city". To achieve this, destinations must map data platforms and interfaces to the individual stakeholders. The greatest effect is achieved when all data is combined to benefit the entire region.

Visitor flows are to be spread across different destinations so that this region can handle the numbers without affecting its environment.

Problem description

Over-tourism describes the concentration of tourists in one place. Too much tourism has problematic effects for the respective place, city or even a country. This also includes the effects on the local population, visitors, the infrastructure or nature at popular tourism destinations.

Solution approach

In the data service ecosystem, several data sources are sovereignly linked: tourism offer data from three partner municipalities and a tourism organization, weather data from a weather service and mobile frequency data from a mobile phone provider. This creates a customer flow analysis from a data service provider that helps participating tourism regions target customers more effectively and better direct or distribute them throughout the region.
