Optimized district heating

The consumption of energy in tourist regions in Austria is strongly dependent on tourist frequency and capacity utilization. This makes an accurate estimation of the energy demand difficult. In addition, the transport of energy sources such as biomass is weather-dependent and must be taken into account in the planning of energy producers and distributors.

Mission

To enable user-oriented energy production and distribution, data is sovereignly linked in a data service ecosystem. This creates forecast models that serve as an information base for sustainable decisions.

Problem description

An alpine community covers up to 90 percent of its heat demand by means of district heating. Consumption is highly dependent on tourist frequency and occupancy, which makes it difficult to estimate demand accurately. In addition, biomass must be regularly transported to the region as an energy source, which must be planned according to weather conditions due to avalanche runoff.

Solution approach

In the data service ecosystem, multiple data sources are sovereignly linked: Mobile frequency data from a mobile service provider, energy consumption data from the energy operator, calendar data from open sources, weather data from a weather service, and overnight stay data from the tourism organization. This enables a data service provider to create a forecasting model as an information base that enables intelligent and optimized decisions regarding consumption fluctuations, and delivery times and quantities for energy suppliers and consumers.

Result

+3% more efficient operation of the power plant

The data has led to improved planning and, as a result, more efficient operation of the power plant.

Control of demand fluctuations

Based on the data, a data-based, targeted control of demand fluctuations can take place.

Cost savings

Significant cost savings were achieved through value maximization.

Environment protection

Saving biomass as an energy source contributed to environmental protection and created a scalable solution for a more sustainable energy economy.
